Fort Moultrie

Sullivan’s Island, SC

Fort Moultrie was built in 1776 to protect the city of Charleston, SC. It remained in use until 1947. The use of palmetto logs to build the fort inspired the name (“The Palmetto State”) and flag (palmetto tree and moon) of the state of South Carolina.
