Danvers State Hospital and Cemetery

Danvers, Massachusetts

Danvers State Hospital was built in 1874 and opened in 1878. Like many other psychiatric hospitals of its time, many controversial methods were used to keep the inpatient population under control. Methods such as shock therapies, use of certain drugs and lobotomies were performed at the hospital. The hospital eventually closed in 1992 and stood atop a desolated hill until 2013 when the building was transformed into luxury apartments.
